Alumni Update: Mike Brown '11

Mike Brown '11 is a Senior Associate at the law firm WilmerHale LLP in Boston.  He graduated Dartmouth with a major in Government and a minor in French.  After graduating he spent two years living with friends from Dartmouth in Manhattan and working as a Legal Assistant at the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP.  He attended Michigan Law School, where he served as Co-Chair of OutLaws, Michigan's LGBTQ student organization.  Mr. Brown served as a student attorney during his third year in Michigan's Juvenile Justice Clinic where he represented youth in criminal proceedings.  After law school, Mr. Brown joined the law firm WilmerHale LLP, where he worked for his first year doing criminal investigations and civil litigation.  He then worked for two years for the Honorable Magistrate Judge Judith Gail Dein of the District Court of Massachusetts where he served as her claw clerk for the PROMESA cases, the set of lawsuits administering Puerto Rico's financial restructuring.  Mr. Brown returned to WilmerHale in the Fall of 2019 where he works today.  He represents clients in a range of civil litigation, investigations, and securities litigation.  In 2021 Mr. Brown was awarded the John H. Pickering Award by WilmerHale for his work on behalf of a class of civil immigration detainees held in unsafe congregate conditions during the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic.  Mr. Brown and his team received the 2020 Leadership in Pro Bono and Community Service Award from the organization Lawyers for Civil Rights for their work on the same litigation.  Mr. Brown was included in Best Lawyers' 2022 edition of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch.

Mr. Brown credits the Government department at Dartmouth not only with adequately preparing him for the challenges of law school, but also for offering an array of courses that challenged him to think about and evaluate our country's legal system through nontraditional lenses.  He is excited for all of the current government majors beginning their journey and hopes some may join him and the many other Dartmouth alums who have chosen careers in the law.
