The new issue of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine features government professor Sean Westwood and the Polarization Research Lab, which he directs. Surprisingly, Westwood's research suggests that we agree more than we think—but "Americans are inundated by negativity from their elected officials and form a warped view of the state of American politics," Westwood says. "Survey data tell us that the public doesn't want negative politics. So, the real question is: If the public doesn't demand it, why are elected officials being so negative?"
