The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Steve Dettelbach '88, a Dartmouth Alum and a former top federal prosecutor, to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, boosting the agency as the country struggles with rising gun violence. Dettelbach was confirmed by a 48-to-46 vote that split mostly along party lines; Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) voted with Democrats. The vote marks the first time the Senate has confirmed an ATF leader since 2013.

Charles Buker graduated from Dartmouth in 2011 with a major in Government and a minor in Spanish. While at Dartmouth, Charles was actively involved as a writer for the Dartmouth Independent. He also conducted research with Professor Dean Lacy regarding post-war reconstruction in Iraq and participated in the Spanish FSP program in Madrid. Expecting to pursue an English major upon first arriving at Dartmouth, Charles credits Professor Jennifer Lind's Government 5 course with sparking his interest in Government and in international relations more broadly.
